Indian Navy Polo Stick 2001

61 Cav clinch Indian Navy Polo Stick at Mumbai (Fri)

The finals of the Indian Navy Polo Stick were played today at 5:00 pm at the Mahalaxmi Race Course Polo Field in Mumbai. The teams competing for the trophy were the 61st Cavelry and Piramal ARC B.
61st Cavalry team : Maj. Manoj Dewan (+2), Capt NS Sandhu (+3), Lt. Samantray (-2) and Maj. Ahlawat (+2).
Piramal ARC B team : Raj Shroff (+2), Dhruvpal Godara (+5), Abishek Tapuriah (0), Rihyad Kundanmal (0).
The 61st Cav team outplayed the Piramal ARC B team and won the Navy Polo Stick comfortably although Dhruvpal Godara and gang did put up a tough fight in the early chukkars of the fast paced game. At one point in the last chukkar the Piramal ARC team scored twice in a short period of time which again rekindled their dying hopes, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Maj Manoj Dewan was the top scorer for the Cavelry. Sandhu and Ahlawat also put in great games as did Lt. Samantray who played well above his -2 handicap.
The crowd was thrilled with the performance of the top Indian players and their fast paced game, at times even the commentator (Ram Shroff) was out of breath at times.

Indian Navy Polo Stick Results (Mar 8) from Mumbai

On Thu morning at 9:15 am the Piramal ARC B team met the Officers Choice team to decide who would play against the 61st Cavelry team in the Finals of the Indian Navy Polo Stick to be played at the ARC Polo Ground in Mumbai on Friday March 9 at 5:00 pm.
The teams were:
Piramal ARC B team : Raj Shroff (+2), Dhruvpal Godara (+5), Abishek Tapuriah (0), Rihyad Kundanmal (0).
Officers Choice : Dinyar Madon (0), Vishal Nihalani (0), Angad Kalaan (+4), Shyam Mariwala (+2)
The game was exciting and fast paced right from the start with Dhruvpal Godara (Piramal ARC B team), a member of the Indian World Cup Team, taking full charge of the game. His complete control over the ball in a hockey like manner was a pleasure to watch. His main opponent from the other team (Officers Choice) was Angad Kalaan, another member of the World Cup team. However, Angad's effectiveness was severely hampered by Abhishek Tapuriah of the Piramal ARC team, who stuck to him not letting him take too many strokes. Dinyar Madon, Vishal Nihalini, and Shyam Mariwala tried hard but the Piramal ARC team with Dhruvpal Godara proved too much for them after the middle of the 3rd chukkar.
In the end the Piramal ARC B team outplayed the Officers Choice team, and advanced to the finals.
